Academia is a term used to describe the academic world, which includes universities, colleges, and other institutions that are involved in the teaching and research of academic subjects. Academia also refers to the people who work within these institutions, such as faculty members, administrators, and students.

What are some of the problems within academia today?

  1. High cost of tuition: The cost of tuition has been rising steadily over the years, making it increasingly difficult for many students to afford a college education.
  2. Lack of diversity: Despite efforts to increase diversity on college campuses, there is still a lack of racial and gender diversity in many academic departments.
  3. Low faculty salaries: Faculty salaries have been stagnant for many years, making it difficult for universities to attract and retain quality faculty members.
  4. Increased administrative bureaucracy: The number of administrative tasks and procedures required to run a university can make it difficult for faculty members to focus on teaching and research.
  5. Increased pressure on students: With the increasing cost of tuition comes an increased pressure on students to perform well in order to succeed academically.
  6. Academic publishing is exploitative, elitist and exclusionary
