Who is Art Pope?

Art Pope is a businessman, philanthropist, attorney, and former government official from North Carolina. He is the owner, chairman, and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, a group of retail stores in 16 states. Pope is also the president and chairman of the John William Pope Foundation. He co-founded the American conservative think tanks the John Locke Foundation and the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal. The Pope Foundation has nearly $150 million in assets and supports humanitarian causes, education, public policy, and the arts. However, criticisms have been made that his donations primarily support institutions that benefit his own views and maintain his power as a wealthy individual.
