Biological sex refers to a set of biological attributes in humans and other animals, associated with physical and physiological features such as chromosomes, gene expression, hormone levels and reproductive anatomy.
The most prevalent sexes are understood to be male and female, though there are many others, such as those with trisomy X
In most animals, those with the larger gametes are typically described as female and those with smaller gametes are typically described as male.
Misunderstandings of biological sex
There is a misunderstanding that biological sex can only have two categories: male and female. This can result in significant problems with those who do not fit into those two over-simplistic categories.
Biological sex is often confused with gender.
