What is black grouse?
Males have a blue-black colour and have vivid red markings above the eye. They have white stripes on the wings and are a similar size to a domestic hen.
Females are larger than males and are a mottled brown-grey colour.
Diet
Black grouse feed on buds, shoots and grass as well as berries when available.
Breeding
Breeding season is from April to May and the males ‘lek’ and display their fanned tails to attract mates, making all kinds of strange noises.
