What is Intersectionality?

Intersectionality is an analytical framework which attempts to understand how various social identities, such as race, gender, Class and sexuality, intersect with each other and how those intersections create overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.

Intersectionality recognizes that individuals experience multiple layers of identity and oppression.

It is a way of understanding how different forms of discrimination interact with each other in order to create unique experiences of oppression. In understanding the complexity of these interactions, intersectionality can be used as a tool to analyze power dynamics in society and to develop strategies for social change.

Who are the most significant voices within the study of intersectionality?

Intersectionality was developed by Kimberlé Crenshaw, a professor of law, who first coined the term in 1989.

Other key scholars and activists in the field include bell hooks bell hooks, Patricia Hill Collins Patricia Hill Collins, and Audre Lorde Audre Lorde.
