Who is Miroslaw Balka?

Miroslaw Balka (b.1958) is a Polish sculptor and visual artist.
Work tends to be stark and melancholic.
He uses everyday materials that have particular symbolic relevance - soap, ash, felt, hair, salt etc..
Much of his work is related to his Catholic upbringing and the turbulant history of Poland.
He has made a memorial for the victims of the Estonia ferry disaster.
