What is Second Brain?

Second brain is a concept that suggests that we can use technology to store, organise, and access information from our minds in the same way we access external information. It provides us with a way to remember facts, ideas, and experiences over time and to connect them to each other to create new insights. It is an idea that has been explored in various ways throughout history but has recently gained traction as technology advances.

The concept of second brain is closely related to the idea of cognitive computing which refers to technologies that replicate human thought processes. These technologies are being developed in order to enhance our ability to think, remember, and make decisions more effectively.

Methods for Building a Second Brain

Tiago Forte's Method for Building a Second Brain

Tiago Forte has developed a system to help individuals create their own second brain, which he calls the “Building a Second Brain” method. This system is based around collecting and organizing information from various sources, such as books, articles, notes, and conversations, into a digital filing cabinet. It also involves creating connections between different pieces of information in order to make them easier to remember and recall.

The method involves using tools like Evernote and Roam Research to store and organize information. In addition, it recommends the use of techniques like mind mapping and concept mapping to help with making connections between different pieces of information.

Cal Newport's CODE Method

The CODE method is an alternative to Tiago Forte’s Building a Second Brain system. It was created by productivity coach, Cal Newport. The CODE method is based around the idea of “capturing, organizing, developing, and executing” ideas in order to achieve goals.

The method involves capturing ideas from books or conversations and storing them in a digital filing cabinet. It also recommends the use of tools like Trello or Asana to help organize tasks and ideas into projects and timelines. Finally, it suggests that individuals use techniques like concept mapping and mind mapping to develop their ideas further and execute them in an effective manner.

I have my own LifeOS. It is built around Obsidian, Google Keep, Google Calendar and Readwise.
