What is Systematic Skimming?

Systematic skimming is an approach to reading that involves focusing on key points and ideas to identify the main ideas in a piece of writing. This approach allows readers to quickly get an understanding of the text, which can be beneficial when dealing with large amounts of material.
Systematic skimming involves first reading the title, subtitle, introduction, and conclusion of a text. Then readers can read through the text more quickly by scanning for key words and phrases. Additionally, readers can use their knowledge of the topic to help them comprehend what they are reading faster.
By using systematic skimming, readers are able to get an overall sense of a text without having to read it in its entirety.

  1. Read the preface
  2. Read the table of contents
  3. Check the index
  4. Read the inside jacket or other metatext in connection with the text.
