What are the most common forms of trauma?

Trauma can be defined as any experience that causes physical, emotional, or psychological distress. It can range from a single event to long-term or chronic exposure to difficult situations. Common forms of trauma include physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, neglect, natural disasters, intimate partner violence, childhood abuse or neglect, bullying or cyberbullying, and genocide.

These experiences can lead to a variety of impacts on an individual’s physical and mental health such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) difficulties in interpersonal relationships, and a host of other mental health issues. It is important for those who have experienced trauma to seek professional help in order to manage the effects and begin the healing process.
