What is yoga?

Yoga is an ancient form of physical and mental exercise that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It involves a combination of stretching, breathing exercises, and poses that are designed to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Yoga can help improve flexibility and strength, reduce stress levels, improve posture, and even increase balance.

What are the most common forms of yoga?

The most common forms of yoga include Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Iyengar. Hatha yoga is a gentle form that focuses on basic poses and breathing exercises. Ashtanga is a more rigorous form of yoga that includes more challenging poses and sequences. Vinyasa is a dynamic form that combines movement with breathwork. Iyengar is a type of yoga that emphasises proper alignment in the poses.

List of common yoga poses and how to perform them

  1. Downward Facing Dog: Begin in a tabletop position with hands and feet on the floor. Exhale and lift your hips up and back, pressing the palms and feet firmly into the ground. Hold for 3-5 breaths.

  2. Warrior I: Begin in a lunge position with your right foot forward and left foot back. Bend your right knee, keeping it over the heel, while straightening your left leg. Raise both arms above your head, palms facing each other, and hold for 3-5 breaths.

  3. Tree Pose: Begin standing with your feet together. Shift all of your weight to one foot, then slowly lift the other foot off of the ground and place it on either your ankle or inner thigh (do not place it directly on the knee). Raise both arms above your head, palms facing each other, and hold for 3-5 breaths.

  4. Child's Pose: Begin on hands and knees in a tabletop position with feet together behind you. Slowly lower your hips down to rest between the heels while stretching your arms out in front of you with palms facing down towards the ground or resting at either side of you head with elbows close to the body (optionally). Hold for 3-5 breaths before slowly returning to tabletop position.
